Assam Unveils ₹50,000-Crore Development Plan With Major Push for Roads, Housing, Healthcare and Power

₹50,000-Crore Package to Drive Assam’s Infrastructure and Welfare Growth

The Assam Cabinet has approved a massive ₹50,000-crore financial package to speed up development across the state. The investment will support major projects in infrastructure, healthcare, education, housing, flood protection, roads and electricity.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision after the Cabinet meeting, saying the funds will help Assam strengthen its development base and move toward a more advanced and economically stronger future.

The funding will be arranged through the state’s own resources, assistance from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), and different programs of the Central Government.

Housing and Education Get Major Development Focus

Housing for tea garden workers is among the key priorities under the new development package. The plan also focuses on building and upgrading educational institutions across Assam.

Several student-focused welfare initiatives are expected to receive support as part of the broader investment. The Cabinet has also approved plans for dedicated markets for women and hostel facilities, aimed at creating better opportunities and support systems for women and students.

Assam to Strengthen Flood Protection Infrastructure

Flood management is another major part of the development push. Funds will be used to strengthen anti-flood embankments and improve protection against the recurring floods that affect several parts of Assam every year.

Improved flood protection infrastructure is expected to help safeguard communities, homes, farmland and important public assets while making the state more prepared to handle seasonal flooding.

Healthcare and Anganwadi Services to Be Upgraded

The package also places strong emphasis on improving healthcare services. Investment will support primary healthcare facilities and the modernization of Anganwadi centers.

These measures are aimed at improving access to essential services, particularly for communities that depend heavily on public healthcare and welfare facilities.

Roads and Power Network to Support Assam’s Economy

Road and power infrastructure will also receive a major boost under the plan. Better connectivity and stronger electricity networks are expected to support industrial growth, improve transportation and create a stronger foundation for economic activity.

The government sees improved infrastructure as an important part of attracting investment and expanding opportunities across Assam.

₹600 Crore Proton Therapy Centre Approved at Gauhati Medical College

One of the biggest highlights of the Cabinet decisions is the approval of ₹600 crore for a Proton Beam Therapy facility at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

The advanced cancer treatment center is planned as a major addition to Assam’s public healthcare infrastructure. It is expected to provide access to advanced cancer treatment within a government hospital.

According to the announcement, the facility will be the first Proton Beam Therapy center of its kind in an Indian government hospital. Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation treatment that can deliver radiation more precisely to certain tumors while helping reduce exposure to nearby healthy tissues.

At present, Proton Beam Therapy facilities in India are available in the private sector, including in Mumbai and Chennai.

Assam Expands Its Long-Term Development Vision

The ₹50,000-crore package brings together infrastructure development and welfare measures across several important sectors. From housing and education to flood protection, healthcare, roads and power, the plan is designed to address key development needs while supporting Assam’s long-term economic growth.
