Maharashtra Aims to Become a Global Automotive and EV Hub, Says CM Devendra Fadnavis

Maharashtra is working toward becoming a leading global automotive and future mobility hub, with a strong focus on electric vehicles, advanced technology, research, and innovation. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state wants to serve not only India's growing automobile market but also Asia and international markets.

Speaking at the launch of Mercedes-Benz's electric GLC in Pune, Fadnavis encouraged automobile manufacturers to use their facilities in Chakan as global production centers. He said Maharashtra has the potential to manufacture vehicles for customers across the world instead of limiting production to domestic demand.

Maharashtra Accounts for 20% of India's Vehicle Production

Highlighting Maharashtra's strong position in the automobile industry, the Chief Minister said the state contributes approximately 20% of India's total motor vehicle production.

Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have developed into major automotive manufacturing destinations. The region is supported by thousands of manufacturing units and ancillary industries that contribute to vehicle production, engineering, and the wider automobile supply chain.

Fadnavis said Maharashtra wants to build on this industrial strength and attract more global automobile companies. He also encouraged manufacturers to expand their production capabilities and explore opportunities in international markets.

Chakan to Become a Global Automotive Manufacturing Destination

The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of Chakan's manufacturing facilities in strengthening Maharashtra's position in the global automobile sector.

He encouraged companies operating in the region to use their existing infrastructure to produce vehicles for India, Asia, and other international markets. According to him, the state's next phase of growth should focus on advanced manufacturing, engineering, and the development of future mobility technologies.

Recalling his visit to the Mercedes-Benz Chakan plant in 2015, when he inaugurated its expansion, Fadnavis said Maharashtra has made significant progress in advanced automobile manufacturing since then.

Maharashtra Targets 30% Electric Vehicle Registrations by 2030

Electric mobility is another major priority in Maharashtra's automotive development plans. The state aims to achieve a 30% share of electric vehicles in new vehicle registrations by 2030.

To support this target, the government is working to improve electric vehicle charging infrastructure, including fast-charging facilities along important highways.

Sustainable mobility corridors are also being developed along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Samruddhi Highway. These initiatives are expected to encourage electric vehicle adoption and make cleaner transportation more convenient for people traveling across the state.

Focus on EV Batteries, AI, Semiconductors and Autonomous Driving

Fadnavis said Maharashtra's automotive vision goes beyond traditional vehicle manufacturing. The state wants to develop strong capabilities in emerging technologies that will shape the future of transportation.

Key focus areas include:

  • Electric vehicle manufacturing and battery technology.
  • Power electronics and semiconductor development.
  • Artificial intelligence and automotive software.
  • Autonomous and assisted driving technologies.
  • Engineering research and advanced technological development.
  • Innovation in next-generation mobility solutions.

The Chief Minister emphasized that Maharashtra should become a center for research, engineering, and technological innovation, moving beyond the traditional concept of manufacturing under the Make in Maharashtra vision.

Maharashtra Plans to Create More Skilled Jobs in the Automotive Sector

The state's global automotive ambitions are also expected to create new opportunities for engineers, technology professionals, and skilled workers.

Fadnavis stressed the importance of developing engineering talent and building a workforce capable of supporting advanced automobile manufacturing and emerging mobility technologies.

With its established industrial network, skilled workforce, infrastructure, and growing technology ecosystem, Maharashtra aims to attract more global investments and strengthen its position in the international automotive industry.

Maharashtra's Vision for the Future of Mobility

The Chief Minister's vision highlights Maharashtra's ambition to become one of the leading destinations for automotive manufacturing, electric mobility, and next-generation transportation technologies.

By combining its existing manufacturing strength with investments in EVs, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and research, the state aims to create a competitive automotive ecosystem for global markets.

The focus on Chakan, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad, along with sustainable highway infrastructure and advanced technology development, is expected to support Maharashtra's long-term industrial growth and create new opportunities for businesses and skilled professionals.
