Mumbai Local Train Alert: Services To Be Short-Terminated At Mumbai Central As Western Railway Undertakes Major FOB Work; Central Railway Announces Mega Block On May 31
Mumbai: Mumbaikars travelling by local trains this weekend are advised to plan their journeys carefully, as both Western Railway and Central Railway have announced major maintenance blocks that will impact suburban train services across several sections of the city.
While Western Railway will undertake an overnight infrastructure block at Marine Lines station for the launch of Foot Over Bridge (FOB) girders, Central Railway will conduct a mega block on its Main and Harbour lines on Sunday, May 31, to carry out essential maintenance and engineering work.
Western Railway to Short-Terminate Trains at Mumbai Central
Western Railway will carry out a major overnight block during the intervening night of May 30 and May 31 at Marine Lines station. The work involves launching new Foot Over Bridge girders using heavy cranes as part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
Due to the block, several late-night suburban trains bound for Churchgate will be short-terminated at Mumbai Central station.
Train services originating from Borivali and Virar during the block period will operate only up to Mumbai Central and remain cancelled between Mumbai Central and Churchgate. Similarly, select outbound services scheduled to originate from Churchgate will instead commence from Mumbai Central.
Railway officials said these temporary changes are necessary to ensure the safe execution of bridge-launching operations while minimizing disruption to daytime services.
First And Last Churchgate Services During the Block
The last train to reach Churchgate before the commencement of the block will arrive shortly after 1:00 AM. Following completion of the work, suburban services will resume early in the morning, with the first fast and slow services departing Churchgate before 5:00 AM.
Western Railway clarified that no daytime block has been planned on May 31 and regular suburban operations will continue as scheduled throughout the day.
Central Railway Announces Mega Block on Main and Harbour Lines
Alongside the Western Railway work, Central Railway will operate a mega block on Sunday, May 31, affecting both the Main Line and Harbour Line network.
On the Main Line, maintenance work will be carried out between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Vidhyavihar on both Up and Down slow corridors. During the block period, several slow-line services will be diverted via the fast corridor, resulting in temporary changes to halting patterns.
Passengers travelling on affected routes may experience delays, while certain stations on the slow corridor will not receive train halts during the maintenance window.
Harbour Line Services to Remain Suspended During Block Hours
A separate mega block will also be undertaken on the Harbour Line between Kurla and Vashi. As a result, multiple Harbour Line services towards Panvel, Belapur and Vashi, as well as trains heading towards CSMT, will remain suspended during the scheduled block period.
To reduce inconvenience, Central Railway will operate special suburban services between CSMT and Kurla, and between Vashi and Panvel. Harbour Line passengers will also be allowed to use the Trans-Harbour route through Thane, Vashi and Nerul during designated hours.
Railway authorities said the maintenance activities are essential for ensuring passenger safety, infrastructure reliability and the long-term efficiency of Mumbai's suburban rail network. Commuters have been urged to check revised schedules and plan their travel accordingly before heading to stations this weekend.
