Attention Mumbaikars! Central Railway Announces 5-Hour Mega Block on May 24; Main & Harbour Line Services to Be Affected
Mumbai suburban railway commuters may face travel disruptions this weekend as Central Railway has announced a major mega block on Sunday, May 24, across sections of the Main Line and Harbour Line for maintenance and engineering work. Western Railway has also scheduled a jumbo night block between Vasai Road and Virar for infrastructure and signalling maintenance activities.
The maintenance blocks are part of regular railway safety and infrastructure upgrade operations aimed at improving reliability and operational efficiency across Mumbai’s suburban railway network, which remains one of the busiest commuter systems in the world.
Central Railway Announces Mega Block on Main Line
According to Central Railway, the mega block on the Main Line will affect both the Up and Down slow corridors between Matunga and Mulund stations.
The block will remain in place from 11:05 am to 3:55 pm on Sunday, May 24.
During this period, several suburban services will be diverted to fast corridors, leading to expected delays and temporary changes in halting patterns.
Officials stated that the maintenance work is necessary for infrastructure upkeep and operational safety improvements.
Slow Line Trains to Be Diverted Via Fast Corridor
Down slow line services departing from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Mumbai between 10:14 am and 3:32 pm will be diverted to the Down fast line between Matunga and Mulund.
These trains will halt at Sion, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund stations before returning to the slow corridor.
Similarly, Up slow line services departing from Thane between 11:07 am and 3:51 pm will also be diverted to the Up fast line between Mulund and Matunga.
These services will halt at Mulund, Bhandup, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Kurla and Sion before rejoining the slow line.
Central Railway officials stated that diverted services are expected to operate approximately 15 minutes behind schedule during the block period.
No Train Halts at Three Stations During Block
During the mega block hours, trains on both Up and Down lines will not halt at:
- Vidyavihar
- Kanjurmarg
- Nahur
Passengers travelling to these stations have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly and check revised train schedules before travel.
Officials also stated that all suburban services arriving at or departing from CSMT between 11 am and 5 pm may experience delays of around 15 minutes.
Harbour Line Services to Remain Suspended During Block Hours
Apart from the Main Line block, Central Railway has also announced disruptions on the Harbour Line.
Down Harbour Line services between CSMT and Chunabhatti/Bandra will remain suspended from 11:40 am to 4:40 pm.
Meanwhile, Up Harbour services towards CSMT from Chunabhatti and Bandra will remain suspended from 11:10 am to 4:10 pm.
Several Harbour Line trains will remain cancelled during the block period.
Officials confirmed that:
- Down Harbour trains towards Vashi, Belapur and Panvel departing from CSMT between 11:16 am and 4:47 pm will remain cancelled
- Services towards Bandra and Goregaon departing from CSMT between 10:48 am and 4:43 pm will also remain suspended
The railway administration has advised commuters to check updated schedules and allow additional travel time during the maintenance period.
Western Railway Also Announces Jumbo Night Block
In addition to Central Railway’s mega block, Western Railway will also undertake a jumbo night block between Vasai Road and Virar.
The night block is being conducted for track and signalling maintenance work aimed at improving operational safety and infrastructure reliability on the Western suburban corridor.
Officials stated that such maintenance activities are essential for ensuring smooth suburban train operations across Mumbai’s highly congested rail network.
Commuters Advised to Plan Travel in Advance
Railway authorities have appealed to passengers to remain alert about revised train operations, temporary cancellations and altered schedules during the maintenance period.
With both Central Railway and Western Railway carrying out infrastructure works simultaneously over the weekend, commuters travelling across suburban corridors may witness delays, diversions and crowding at several stations.
Passengers are therefore being advised to check railway announcements and updated suburban schedules before starting their journeys on Sunday.
