SevenHills Hospital Revival Nears Reality as BMC Finalises Deal for 1,500-Bed Super-Specialty Facility

SevenHills Hospital Revival Nears Reality as BMC Finalises Deal for 1,500-Bed Super-Specialty Facility

After years of uncertainty surrounding the SevenHills Hospital project in Andheri East, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is reportedly moving closer to reviving the long-stalled healthcare facility through a new redevelopment and operational agreement.

According to officials, the BMC is in the final stages of signing an agreement with Capri Global to operate and redevelop the hospital into a modern 1,500-bed super-specialty healthcare centre in Mumbai.

The proposed redevelopment is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the city while also ensuring dedicated treatment capacity for civic patients.

A Long-Pending Healthcare Project Set for Revival

The SevenHills Hospital project was originally launched in 2004 under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with the vision of creating a 1,300-bed multi-specialty hospital in Mumbai.

As part of the original agreement, 20 percent of the beds were meant to be reserved for BMC patients.

The project was initially operated by SevenHills Healthcare Private Limited. However, over time, the project faced operational and contractual challenges, and the hospital never became fully functional. The issue eventually led to prolonged legal proceedings after the BMC reportedly issued notices to the company in 2018.

Despite the delays, the hospital infrastructure remained strategically important due to its scale and location within Mumbai’s growing healthcare ecosystem.

SevenHills Played a Key Role During the Pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the SevenHills Hospital facility was temporarily converted into a dedicated COVID treatment centre.

At the time, the BMC increased bed capacity at the hospital to meet emergency healthcare requirements during one of the most critical phases of the pandemic.

The temporary transformation of the facility highlighted the hospital’s large-scale infrastructure potential and its importance within Mumbai’s healthcare network.

Capri Global to Invest ₹400 Crore in Redevelopment

According to officials, Capri Global has agreed to clear outstanding civic dues worth ₹183.51 crore as part of the proposed arrangement.

In addition, the company has reportedly committed to investing ₹400 crore over the next five years to redevelop and modernise the facility.

The redevelopment plan aims to transform SevenHills Hospital into a 1,500-bed super-specialty hospital equipped to serve both private and civic healthcare requirements.

Importantly, around 300 beds are expected to remain reserved for BMC patients, continuing the public healthcare component of the project.

NCLT Approval Clears the Way Forward

Officials stated that the proposal has already received approval from the National Company Law Tribunal, clearing a major procedural step in the redevelopment process.

Sources indicated that the final agreement between the BMC and Capri Global is expected to be completed soon.

The approval marks an important step towards resolving one of Mumbai’s longest-pending healthcare infrastructure projects and could pave the way for large-scale operational revival at the facility.

A Major Boost for Mumbai’s Healthcare Infrastructure

The proposed redevelopment of SevenHills Hospital represents more than just the revival of a stalled project. It also reflects Mumbai’s growing focus on expanding advanced healthcare infrastructure through large-scale public-private partnerships.

A 1,500-bed super-specialty hospital would significantly add to the city’s healthcare capacity while also strengthening access for civic patients through the reserved bed allocation.

As Mumbai continues to grow, demand for large, multi-specialty healthcare facilities remains critical. The revival of SevenHills Hospital could therefore become an important milestone in the city’s long-term healthcare expansion plans.
