Nitesh Rane to Join Mumbra Kanwar Yatra as ‘Mumbra Devi’ Renaming Debate Gains Attention
BJP minister Nitesh Rane is scheduled to visit Mumbra on Sunday to participate in the Kanwar Yatra, as his proposal to rename the Thane suburb continues to draw political reactions.
Nitesh Rane Set to Attend Kanwar Yatra in Mumbra
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Nitesh Rane is expected to visit Mumbra on Sunday to take part in the Kanwar Yatra. His planned visit comes at a time when his recent comments about changing the name of Mumbra have become a subject of political discussion.
Rane has supported the idea of renaming the Thane suburb as Mumbra Devi, referring to previous name changes of cities and towns in Maharashtra.
Rane Backs Proposal to Rename Mumbra
Rane recently spoke about the possibility of changing Mumbra’s name while participating in a Tiranga Yatra. He pointed to earlier changes, including the renaming of Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv.
He said efforts were being made to restore traditional identities and suggested that Mumbra could also be renamed Mumbra Devi.
The comments have added a new political dimension to the ongoing debate over the identity and development of the densely populated Thane suburb.
Mumbra Renaming Issue Has Faced Opposition Before
This is not the first time Rane's proposal to rename Mumbra has faced opposition. The issue was also raised earlier this year during a meeting at Mumbra-Shil Phata held on the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's death anniversary.
At that event, Rane said he would continue to support the idea of changing the name of Mumbra and spoke about putting up saffron flags across the area.
His comments have continued to fuel discussion between political leaders with different views on the proposed name change.
Abu Azmi Calls for Focus on Development
Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi has strongly opposed the renaming proposal. He has argued that the priority should be improving the living conditions and basic facilities available to residents.
Azmi said Mumbra has a large population and has become home to many families because of its relatively affordable housing options. He called for greater attention to infrastructure and public services rather than changing the area's name.
According to Azmi, key priorities should include better schools and colleges, improved roads, stronger civic services and other basic facilities needed by residents.
Mumbra Development Remains a Key Local Issue
The latest political debate has brought renewed attention to Mumbra, an important residential area in the Thane region. While the proposed name change has become a political talking point, residents also continue to have everyday concerns related to housing, transport, education, roads and civic infrastructure.
Rane's participation in the Kanwar Yatra on Sunday is therefore expected to attract attention as the debate over the proposed Mumbra Devi name continues.
For now, the issue remains a matter of political discussion, with Rane supporting the proposed change and opponents calling for greater focus on development and public amenities.
