Maharashtra Plans Solar-Powered Passenger Boats To Build Cleaner, Safer Water Transport

Maharashtra is taking steps to modernize its passenger water transport network by exploring solar-powered boats that can offer safer, cleaner and more comfortable travel. Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane has asked officials to prepare proposals for introducing modern boats on key routes across the state.

Maharashtra Pushes For Solar-Powered Water Transport

Minister Nitesh Rane gave the directions during a meeting at Mantralaya on Sunday, where Navalt Boats presented its latest passenger boat technology powered by solar energy and other advanced systems.

The proposal aims to reduce the use of conventional fuels in water transport and encourage cleaner energy options. Solar-powered boats could help lower fuel dependence while supporting more environmentally friendly passenger services.

Rane emphasized the need to use modern technology to improve the overall passenger experience. Better safety features, cleaner operations and improved comfort are expected to become important parts of Maharashtra's future water transport plans.

Modern Boats Proposed For Key Mumbai Routes

The meeting included discussions on introducing a 49-passenger speedboat for the Versova-Madh Ro-Ro service. Officials also considered a 20-passenger boat for the Gateway of India-Alibaug-Mandwa route.

The state is also looking at the possibility of operating modern passenger boats between Mumbai and Sindhudurg. These services could strengthen water-based connectivity and provide passengers with additional travel options.

The focus on modern boats is part of a wider effort to make better use of Maharashtra's waterways and improve passenger ferry services.

Maharashtra Maritime Board Asked To Prepare Proposal

Rane directed the Maharashtra Maritime Board and the Ports Department to prepare a detailed proposal for expanding passenger water transport with modern boats.

Officials have also been asked to examine opportunities to increase revenue through improved water transport services. The plan is expected to balance better passenger facilities with efficient and sustainable operations.
