Alibaug to Get ₹4.43 Crore Green Zone Under Amrit 2.0 for Eco-Tourism and Mangrove Conservation

2.3-Acre Green Zone to Blend Tourism, Nature and Environmental Education

Alibaug is set to add a new eco-friendly destination as the Alibaug Municipal Council has received ₹4.43 crore under the Centre’s Amrit 2.0 scheme to develop a Green Zone focused on eco-tourism and environmental awareness.

The project will cover about 2.3 acres of municipal land and is designed to give residents and tourists a closer look at the area’s natural environment while protecting its existing coastal ecosystem. A tender for the project has already been published, marking an important step toward implementation.

Elevated Mangrove Boardwalk to Protect Natural Habitat

One of the key features of the proposed Green Zone will be an elevated boardwalk through the mangrove area. The walkway will allow visitors to observe the mangrove ecosystem without directly stepping into or disturbing the natural habitat.

The elevated design is expected to reduce ground-level interference while creating a safe and informative experience for tourists, students and local residents.

The project aims to balance public access with the need to preserve the sensitive coastal environment.

Interactive Learning Area to Promote Environmental Awareness

An interactive learning workshop area will also be developed at the site. The facility will focus on educating visitors about mangroves, biodiversity and the importance of coastal ecosystems.

Through interactive activities and learning experiences, the center is expected to encourage greater awareness among citizens, students and tourists about protecting nature.

The initiative will make environmental education an important part of the visitor experience rather than focusing only on tourism.

Eco-Tourism and Mangrove Conservation at the Core

The Green Zone has been planned around three major goals: promoting eco-tourism, increasing environmental awareness and creating a sustainable public space connected with nature.

Mangroves play an important role in coastal areas. They provide shelter for various species and help protect shorelines from storms, flooding and strong waves. By carefully planning visitor facilities around the existing mangrove ecosystem, the project aims to support tourism without putting unnecessary pressure on the environment.

Officials have emphasized that protecting the existing natural habitat will remain a major priority during construction and development.

Alibaug Green Zone Project Moves Into Tender Stage

The ₹4.43-crore project has now entered the tendering stage. Once completed, the Green Zone could become a new attraction for visitors to Alibaug while also providing a dedicated location for environmental learning and conservation awareness.

Sagar Salunkhe, chief officer of Alibaug Municipal Council, said the project is currently in the tendering phase and that the work order is likely to be issued next year.

He said Alibaug is a coastal city where development needs to progress alongside environmental protection. The Green Zone, he added, is planned not only as a tourist destination but also as an environmental education center where people can learn about the importance of mangroves.

New Eco-Tourism Model for Alibaug

With its elevated mangrove walkway and interactive learning facilities, the proposed Green Zone could give Alibaug a new way to showcase its natural heritage.

The project is expected to strengthen eco-tourism while encouraging residents and visitors to better understand the value of mangroves and coastal biodiversity. If implemented as planned, it could also offer a useful model for combining tourism, public education and mangrove conservation in coastal areas.
