Maharashtra Government Announces ₹5,000 Financial Aid for Farmers in Drought-Hit Talukas

The Maharashtra government will provide initial financial assistance of ₹5,000 to farmers in drought-affected areas before Diwali, along with relief measures to ease their financial burden.

The Maharashtra government has expanded drought relief measures after declaring 305 of the state's 358 talukas drought-affected. The decision came after 40 additional talukas were added to the list. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that eligible farmers would receive an initial financial assistance of ₹5,000 directly in their bank accounts before Diwali.

305 Talukas to Receive 12 Drought Relief Benefits

Speaking to reporters after a state cabinet meeting in Mumbai, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said all 12 standard drought relief concessions would be made available to the 305 affected talukas. The measures aim to support farmers facing crop losses, water shortages, and financial difficulties.

The relief package includes restructuring of crop loans, concessions on land revenue, subsidies on electricity bills, and exemptions from fees for farmers' children. These benefits are intended to reduce financial pressure on farming families and help them manage essential expenses during the drought.

Banks Warned Against Harassing Farmers for Loan Recovery

The state government has instructed cooperative banks and credit societies not to pressure or harass farmers for loan recovery in drought-affected areas. Efforts are also underway to ensure that private banks and financial institutions follow similar guidelines.

The move is aimed at providing farmers with financial relief during a difficult agricultural season and preventing additional stress caused by loan repayment demands.

Maharashtra Steps Up Water Supply Measures in Marathwada

The government is also taking steps to address the growing water shortage, particularly in the Marathwada region. Chief Minister Fadnavis said groundwater levels in the region had fallen below three meters, making it necessary to deploy water tankers early.

To improve monitoring and ensure proper distribution, water tankers will be tracked through GPS technology.

The state has also disconnected nearly 16,000 illegal water connections to protect drinking water supplies and improve access to water for residents.

Government Assures Farmers of Fodder Availability

Fodder availability remains another important concern during the drought. According to the chief minister, existing fodder reserves are estimated to last between 90 days and seven months, depending on the region.

To support livestock owners and ensure a steady supply of animal feed, the government has assured farmers that fodder harvested in suitable areas will be purchased at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

This measure is expected to help farmers manage livestock-related expenses and protect their livelihoods during the water shortage.

No Examination Fees for Students in Drought-Affected Talukas

In a separate relief measure, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil has directed colleges across Maharashtra not to collect examination fees from students belonging to drought-affected talukas.

Colleges that have already collected these fees must refund the amount to eligible students. The minister also warned that strict action would be taken against institutions that fail to follow the instructions.

The directions were issued during an online meeting with vice-chancellors of state public universities in Mumbai. The meeting reviewed examination-related concerns and other academic matters.

Maharashtra Expands ₹5,000 Support for Farmers and Families

With 305 talukas now classified as drought-affected, the Maharashtra government is combining direct financial assistance with relief on loans, electricity bills, education fees, water supply, and fodder availability.

The announced ₹5,000 assistance before Diwali is intended to provide immediate support to eligible farmers, while the wider relief measures aim to help farming families and students manage the impact of drought conditions across the state.
