Maharashtra Speeds Up Slum Rehabilitation in Mumbai and Pune With Strong Push for Faster Housing Projects

Minister Madhuri Misal Directs Agencies to Accelerate Surveys, Planning and Project Execution

The Maharashtra Government has intensified its efforts to speed up slum rehabilitation projects in Mumbai and Pune, aiming to provide eligible families with better housing through faster execution, improved planning and stronger coordination among government agencies.

Minister of State for Urban Development, Transport, Social Justice, Medical Education, Minority Development and Waqf, Madhuri Misal, has instructed officials to remove project delays, complete essential surveys quickly and ensure rehabilitation projects move forward in a transparent and time-bound manner.

Government Focuses on Faster and More Efficient Rehabilitation

During a high-level review meeting held on Tuesday, Minister Misal directed officials to accelerate the implementation of slum rehabilitation projects through the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) and MahaPreit under a pilot-based approach.

She emphasized that closer coordination between departments would help streamline project execution while ensuring eligible residents receive improved housing without unnecessary delays.

The state government is focusing on simplifying project procedures, strengthening planning and improving monitoring systems to make rehabilitation projects more efficient across Maharashtra's major cities.

Senior Officials Review Progress of Mumbai and Pune Projects

The meeting was attended by MahaPreit Managing Director Bipin Shrimali, Pune Slum Rehabilitation Authority Chief Executive Officer Satishkumar Khadke, Housing Department Deputy Secretary Chandrashekhar Tarange, along with other senior government officials.

Officials reviewed the current status of rehabilitation projects in Mumbai and Pune and discussed practical measures to improve project implementation.

Key areas of discussion included:

• Conducting detailed surveys of ongoing rehabilitation projects
• Appointing expert consultants for better project planning
• Reviewing area-wise project details
• Completing boundary corrections wherever required
• Carrying out visual verification to improve project accuracy
• Strengthening monitoring mechanisms for faster execution

These measures are expected to improve planning, reduce administrative delays and ensure smoother implementation.

Better Coordination to Remove Project Bottlenecks

Minister Misal also directed all concerned departments to work closely together, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), district administrations, MHADA, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority and other implementing agencies.

She said stronger coordination would help resolve pending issues quickly and allow development work to continue without interruptions.

Officials were instructed to complete surveys and submit objective reports at the earliest so that rehabilitation projects can move into the next phase without unnecessary delays.

Transparent and Time-Bound Redevelopment Remains the Priority

The Maharashtra Government has reiterated that slum rehabilitation remains one of its key urban development priorities. By improving planning, strengthening inter-departmental coordination and closely monitoring project progress, the government aims to deliver rehabilitation projects more efficiently while maintaining transparency throughout the process.

The renewed focus is expected to benefit thousands of eligible families in Mumbai and Pune by accelerating access to safer, modern and better-planned housing.
