Thane Municipal Corporation Launches ‘Bottles For Change’ Drive To Boost Plastic Recycling In Schools

New TMC Initiative Encourages Students To Segregate Plastic Waste And Build Sustainable Habits

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), in partnership with Bisleri International, has launched the ‘Bottles for Change’ initiative to promote plastic recycling and environmental awareness among school students across Thane.

The program was officially launched on August 7, 2026, at the Late Narendra Ballal Auditorium. Thane Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar inaugurated the initiative in the presence of civic officials, educators, students, and representatives from Bisleri International.

The citywide program focuses on teaching children the importance of separating plastic waste, sending recyclable materials for proper processing, and reducing waste generation. Through active participation, students will get an opportunity to contribute directly to a cleaner and more sustainable Thane.

TMC Focuses On Plastic Waste Segregation In Schools

The ‘Bottles for Change’ initiative aims to make waste segregation a regular habit among students. Participating schools will encourage children to collect different types of plastic waste, including PET bottles, food wrappers, plastic bags, shampoo containers, and plastic toys.

The collected material will then be separated and directed toward recycling. The initiative is designed to help students understand that responsible waste management starts with simple actions at home, in schools, and in the community.

Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar highlighted the importance of involving children in environmental initiatives from an early age. She said that educating students about waste segregation can help create responsible citizens and contribute to a cleaner city in the future.

Digital App And Passbooks To Track Plastic Collection

A key feature of the program is its system for monitoring plastic collection at participating schools.

Each school will receive a dedicated passbook to record the quantity of plastic collected. A mobile application will also maintain digital records of the recyclable plastic sent from individual schools.

The tracking system is expected to make the program more organized and transparent. It will also allow schools and civic authorities to monitor their progress and encourage greater participation among students.

Active Students To Receive Recognition

The initiative will also recognize students who make strong contributions to the plastic collection and recycling campaign.

Periodic assessments will be conducted to measure participation and progress. Students who actively support the program may receive awards and recognition for their environmental efforts.

TMC Highlights The Need To Reduce Waste At The Source

TMC Additional Commissioner Prashant Rode said effective waste management should not focus only on collecting and processing garbage.

He emphasized the importance of reducing waste generation at its source. Educating people about responsible consumption and proper segregation can help reduce the amount of non-biodegradable plastic entering land and water systems.

The school-based initiative is therefore expected to serve as an important step toward developing long-term environmental awareness among young residents of Thane.

Bisleri International Strengthens Partnership For Environmental Awareness

Bisleri International CEO Dr. Angelo George said the company has been working with communities, schools, and civic bodies on environmental initiatives since 2019.

The partnership with TMC is expected to expand these efforts across schools in Thane. By combining civic support with corporate participation, the program aims to encourage students to adopt practical and sustainable habits.

The initiative also gives schools an opportunity to make environmental education more interactive by connecting classroom lessons with real-world recycling activities.

The launch event brought together several senior civic officials, including Leader of the House Hanmant Jagdale, Additional Commissioner Prashant Rode, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Mitali Sancheti, and Education Officer Sheshrao Badhe.

Representatives from Bisleri International, school principals, teachers, and students also attended the ceremony.
