BMC To Launch New Birth Certificate Software, Extend Service Hours To Speed Up Applications Across Mumbai

Digital System, Longer Citizen Centre Timings And Extra Staff To Help Clear Birth Certificate Backlog

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing to launch a new digital software platform to make birth certificate applications and correction requests faster, easier, and more transparent. Along with the new system, the civic body will extend Citizen Facilitation Centre working hours and deploy additional staff to reduce the growing backlog of pending applications in several parts of Mumbai.

The decision comes at a time when many citizens are waiting for birth certificates, especially QR code enabled certificates required for school admissions, higher education, passport applications, and overseas visa processes. The civic administration believes the new measures will improve public services and reduce delays.

BMC Plans Dedicated Digital Platform For Birth Certificate Services

The decision was taken during a review meeting chaired by Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Prajakta Verma Lavangare at the M West Ward office in Chembur.

During the meeting, she instructed officials to speed up the disposal of pending birth certificate applications in M East, M West, and L wards. These include areas such as Mankhurd, Shivaji Nagar, Kurla, and Chembur, where a large number of applications are currently awaiting approval.

According to civic officials, the upcoming software platform will allow applicants to complete most of the process online. Citizens will be able to submit application details, upload supporting documents, and monitor the status of their requests through a digital dashboard.

The online platform is expected to improve transparency by giving applicants regular updates while helping officials process applications more efficiently. The move is in line with BMC's broader efforts to expand digital public services and reduce paperwork across civic departments.

Citizen Facilitation Centers To Work Longer Hours

To provide immediate relief to citizens, the BMC has decided to extend the working hours of Citizen Facilitation Centers handling birth certificate applications.

The centers will now accept applications from 9 am to 5 pm. Officials have also been instructed to keep the centers open on Sundays wherever necessary to manage the increased number of applications.

The extended working hours are expected to benefit working professionals, students, and families who often struggle to visit government offices during regular office timings.

Additional Staff To Speed Up Pending Applications

The civic administration has directed Assistant Commissioners in all concerned wards to deploy additional manpower for birth certificate processing.

More staff members will help verify documents, process applications, and complete corrections more quickly. Officials have also been asked to ensure that applications are cleared within the shortest possible time after submission.

The move is expected to significantly reduce waiting periods and improve overall service delivery.

Priority For QR Code Birth Certificates

The BMC has instructed officials to give priority to applications required for educational purposes.

In recent years, demand for QR code enabled birth certificates has increased as many universities, government agencies, and foreign authorities now require digitally verifiable documents during admissions and visa processing.

Officials have been directed to ensure these applications receive faster attention so that students and applicants do not face unnecessary delays.

BMC Also Reviews Health Infrastructure And Monsoon Preparedness

Apart from reviewing birth certificate services, Additional Municipal Commissioner Prajakta Verma Lavangare also assessed several important healthcare projects across Mumbai.

The review covered public private partnership healthcare initiatives, preparedness for monsoon related diseases, hospital capacity enhancement, and repair work at maternity homes and suburban hospitals.

She also reviewed the functioning of Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion, Govandi Shatabdi Hospital, and Maa Hospital in Chembur. Officials were instructed to carry out regular field inspections and strengthen monitoring systems to improve healthcare services across the city.

Digital Governance Gets Another Push In Mumbai

The new software platform reflects BMC's continued focus on digital governance and citizen friendly services. Similar digital initiatives introduced by the civic body in recent years have helped improve access to municipal services, increase transparency, and reduce manual processing.

With online application tracking, longer service hours, and additional staff support, the latest initiative is expected to make birth certificate issuance and correction faster while reducing inconvenience for thousands of Mumbai residents.

As the new system becomes operational, citizens can expect a smoother application process and quicker access to essential documents needed for education, travel, employment, and other official purposes.
