MHADA Mumbai Board Steps Up Action Against Illegal Construction in Goregaon
The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) Mumbai Board has intensified its action against illegal construction on MHADA-owned land. As part of this drive, a police case has been registered against a developer for unauthorized construction on the upper three floors of a residential building in Goregaon, Mumbai.
The action follows the demolition of 12 unauthorized residential units at Subhashnagar Cooperative Housing Society. Under the leadership of IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal, Vice President and CEO of MHADA, the authority is strengthening its efforts to protect MHADA land and enforce building regulations.
MHADA Takes Legal Action After Demolition in Goregaon
The unauthorized construction was identified in a 22-story building, including the ground floor, at Subhashnagar Cooperative Housing Society in Goregaon. The developer had constructed 12 residential units across the top three floors without obtaining the required permission from the MHADA Mumbai Board.
Developer Faces Police Case After Demolition of 12 Unauthorized Residential Units
The authority completed the required legal procedures, including issuing notices, conducting hearings, and passing the necessary orders against the developer, identified as Vikas Arvind Surti.
Following these procedures, MHADA carried out demolition operations against the unauthorized structures on September 28, 29, and 30, 2026. The developer also reportedly failed to reimburse the Mumbai Board for the expenses incurred during the demolition.
Considering the nature and extent of the unauthorized construction and the facts of the case, the authority registered a police case against the developer at Goregaon Police Station under the applicable provisions of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966.
MHADA Plans Stronger Action Across Mumbai
The Mumbai Board's Encroachment Removal Department plans to intensify its campaign against unauthorized construction in several areas across Mumbai in the coming days.
The targeted locations include Siddharth Nagar and Motilal Nagar in Goregaon, Anand Nagar in Vakola, Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli, S.V.P. Nagar in Andheri, and Gorai and Charkop within the Borivali area.
MHADA will examine cases involving individuals who repeatedly carry out illegal construction. Based on the available evidence and applicable legal provisions, the authority may initiate criminal proceedings against those found responsible.
The campaign aims to discourage unauthorized development, protect public property, and ensure that construction on MHADA land follows the required rules and approval procedures.
MHADA Appeals to Citizens to Follow Building Rules
The MHADA Mumbai Board has urged citizens not to undertake new construction or make unauthorized extensions to approved buildings without obtaining the necessary prior permissions from the competent authority.
The authority has warned that unauthorized structures may be demolished if they are found to violate applicable rules. Those responsible may also face criminal proceedings under the relevant laws.
Residents, developers, and housing societies are encouraged to verify the required permissions before beginning construction or making changes to existing buildings.
Through stricter enforcement and legal action, MHADA aims to prevent illegal construction and promote responsible development across Mumbai. Citizens have been asked to follow building regulations and cooperate with the administration to protect MHADA-owned land.
