Thane Police Commissionerate Launches ‘Rehydration Shield’ Initiative, Distributes 70,000 ORS Bottles To On-Field Officers
In a significant step towards safeguarding the health and well-being of police personnel during the ongoing summer season, the Thane Police Commissionerate has launched a large-scale hydration initiative aimed at protecting officers from heat-related illnesses. Under the programme, 70,000 WHO-certified ready-to-drink Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) bottles are being distributed free of cost to police personnel deployed on field duties across the Commissionerate’s jurisdiction.
The initiative has been introduced under the guidance of Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre and Joint Commissioner of Police Dr. Dnyaneshwar Chavan, with support from Traffic Police Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Shirsat, Hellwood Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. and the Rotary Royal Foundation.
Focus On Health and Safety During Extreme Heat
As temperatures continue to rise across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, traffic police personnel and field officers remain among the most vulnerable groups due to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and challenging working conditions.
Recognising the increasing risk of dehydration, exhaustion and heat strokes, the Thane Police Commissionerate has launched the “Rehydration Shield” programme to ensure officers remain hydrated and physically fit while carrying out their daily responsibilities.
The initiative reflects the department’s growing emphasis on employee welfare and preventive healthcare measures, particularly for frontline personnel who spend several hours managing traffic, maintaining law and order and responding to emergencies in extreme weather conditions.
Supporting Thousands of Officers Across Multiple Cities
The Thane Police Commissionerate cover a vast jurisdiction that includes Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath and Badlapur. The region comprises five police zones, 35 police stations and 18 traffic units, making it one of the busiest policing jurisdictions in Maharashtra.
Thousands of police personnel are deployed daily across these areas, often working outdoors for extended periods. The availability of ready-to-consume hydration supplements is expected to significantly reduce the risk of heat-related health complications among officers.
WHO-Certified Formula for Instant Hydration
The ORS bottles being distributed under the initiative are based on a World Health Organization-certified formulation and are specifically designed to restore electrolyte balance and maintain hydration levels.
Unlike conventional ORS sachets that require mixing with water, these bottles are ready to drink and can be consumed immediately. According to officials associated with the programme, the solution helps provide instant energy, reduce fatigue and support overall physical endurance during long duty hours.
The ready-to-use format is expected to improve accessibility and convenience for police personnel stationed at traffic junctions, checkpoints and other outdoor locations.
Setting An Example in Employee Welfare
The initiative has received appreciation for its proactive approach towards protecting frontline workers during seasonal weather challenges. Observers believe that such measures not only improve the health and morale of personnel but also contribute to better public service by ensuring officers remain physically prepared to perform their duties effectively.
The programme is being viewed as a model welfare initiative that highlights the importance of preventive healthcare and workplace safety for government employees operating in demanding environments.
As Maharashtra continues to experience high summer temperatures, the Thane Police Commissionerate’s “Rehydration Shield” campaign stands out as a practical and timely intervention aimed at protecting those who work tirelessly on the frontlines to keep cities moving and communities safe.
