Thane Coastal Road-1 Crosses 50% Foundation Mark, MMRDA Reports Major Construction Boost

The ambitious Thane Coastal Road-1 project has achieved a significant engineering milestone, with more than 50% of the elevated viaduct’s foundation work completed within just eight months of construction.

The progress update was shared by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), marking a major step forward for the 13.45-km access-controlled corridor designed to transform connectivity in Thane.

Rapid Progress on Elevated Viaduct

According to MMRDA, foundation work has moved swiftly, and construction of pier caps and I-girder erection is now progressing rapidly along the alignment.

The six-lane greenfield road is being built using advanced engineering techniques, including a single-pile, single-pier monopile foundation system — a first-of-its-kind application for a greenfield road project in India.

This method is expected to:

  • Accelerate construction timelines
  • Minimise land disturbance
  • Reduce environmental impact, particularly in ecologically sensitive zones

Designed To Protect Mangroves

A substantial portion of the corridor will run on elevated viaducts and bridges to safeguard the mangrove ecosystems along the Thane Creek coastline.

By reducing on-ground construction footprint, authorities aim to strike a balance between infrastructure growth and environmental conservation — a critical concern in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Decongesting Ghodbunder Road

The Thane Coastal Road-1 has been conceptualised as a strategic freight and traffic relief corridor, primarily aimed at easing congestion on the heavily burdened Ghodbunder Road.

The project will improve connectivity between:

  • National Highway 160 (Mumbai–Nashik Highway)
  • Gaimukh along the Thane Creek stretch

At Gaimukh, the road will seamlessly integrate with the proposed Gaimukh–Fountain Hotel Tunnel, expected to significantly improve access between Thane and Bhayander.

Boost To Freight & Port Connectivity

Officials believe the corridor will streamline freight movement toward key logistics hubs, including:

  • Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT)
  • Wadhawan Port
  • Industrial regions in South Maharashtra and Karnataka

The improved road network is expected to reduce travel time, lower transport costs and strengthen regional trade infrastructure.

Integration With Future Projects

Thane Coastal Road-1 is also being designed to integrate with several upcoming infrastructure initiatives, including:

  • Thane Ring Metro
  • Thane Coastal Road-2
  • Saket–Amane Elevated Corridor
  • Kasarvadavali–Kharbhav Road

This positions the project as a key pillar in Thane’s long-term urban mobility and logistics masterplan.

Why This Milestone Matters

Crossing the 50% foundation mark within eight months signals strong construction momentum. With advanced engineering methods and multi-project integration, the Thane Coastal Road-1 is shaping up to be one of the most transformative transport corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

If completed on schedule, it could significantly reduce congestion, improve freight movement and enhance regional connectivity while preserving environmentally sensitive zones.
