Thane Set to Introduce Prepaid Auto-Rickshaws to End Fare Disputes and Overcharging

New Prepaid Auto System Expected to Bring Easier Rides for Thane Commuters

Thane commuters may soon have a more convenient way to travel from the railway station and other busy areas, as the Maharashtra government is expected to approve a prepaid auto-rickshaw service in the city.

The proposed system will allow passengers to know and pay their fare before starting their journey. The move is aimed at reducing common complaints such as overcharging, ride refusals, fare disagreements, and disputes over destinations.

The proposal is expected to receive government approval by Monday, after which the prepaid auto-rickshaw service could be introduced in Thane city.

Prepaid Auto-Rickshaws to Make Station Travel Easier

The announcement was made by Thane MLA Sanjay Kelkar after a joint meeting with traffic police and Regional Transport Office officials at the Government Rest House in Thane.

The meeting followed an inspection of the Thane railway station area, where officials reviewed traffic congestion and problems faced by daily commuters.

Under the proposed prepaid system, passengers will decide and pay the fare before boarding an auto-rickshaw. A vehicle will then be assigned to the passenger.

This system is expected to make the process clearer for both commuters and drivers. Passengers will not have to negotiate fares after reaching their destination, while drivers will have a fixed fare before beginning the trip.

RTO Officers to Monitor Thane Station During Peak Hours

The administration is also planning stronger monitoring around Thane railway station to improve commuter safety and traffic movement.

According to MLA Sanjay Kelkar, two RTO officers will be deployed during the busy morning and evening hours. Each team will monitor the area for around four hours during peak periods.

The officers will keep an eye on auto-rickshaw operations and help address complaints related to driver behavior, fare issues, and other commuter concerns.

The increased presence of RTO officials is expected to encourage better discipline among drivers and create a smoother experience for passengers arriving at or leaving the railway station.

Permanent Traffic Police Presence Planned at Busy Locations

The meeting also focused on traffic problems in several parts of Thane beyond the railway station.

Officials discussed congestion and traffic management issues in areas including Wagle Estate, Kopri, and Indira Nagar. Several measures were considered to improve traffic movement at important junctions and busy roads.

A permanent traffic police presence is also planned at selected congestion points. The aim is to manage traffic more effectively and respond quickly to problems at major intersections.

Government Move Could Improve Thane’s Daily Public Transport

The introduction of prepaid auto-rickshaws could provide an important improvement for Thane's daily commuters, particularly passengers who depend on autos for the first and last part of their journey.

By fixing fares in advance, the system could reduce arguments between passengers and drivers while making auto-rickshaw services more predictable.

The proposal also reflects a broader effort to improve traffic management and public transportation services in Thane. With better monitoring, fixed fares, and stronger traffic enforcement, commuters could benefit from a safer and more organized travel experience across the city.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pankaj Shirsat, Regional Transport Officer Hemangini Patil, former municipal councillors Bharat Chavan, Amit Saraiya, and Anita Yadav, along with Jayendra Koli and Vishal Wagh.

If approved as expected, the prepaid auto-rickshaw system could soon become a practical solution for some of the long-standing transport concerns faced by Thane commuters.
