Panvel Municipal Corporation Gets Full Control Over School Education Administration

The Maharashtra government has approved the establishment of an Urban Cluster Resource Centre for the Panvel Municipal Corporation, marking a major change in the city's education system. With this decision, 272 schools and nearly 1.75 lakh students will now come under the direct administrative control of the civic body.

Earlier, these schools were managed through the Panchayat Samiti education framework. The new arrangement gives Panvel Municipal Corporation the authority to independently manage school education, improve governance and ensure faster implementation of government policies.

PMC To Oversee 272 Schools Across Panvel

According to the approval issued by the Maharashtra Primary Education Department, the Panvel Municipal Corporation Education Department will now supervise a total of 272 schools within the municipal limits.

These include:

• 51 Zilla Parishad schools
• 11 Panvel Municipal Corporation schools
• 210 aided and unaided private schools

Nearly 1.75 lakh students studying in these institutions will now come under the direct supervision of the civic body's education department.

Education experts believe that this change will help improve coordination between schools and the municipal administration while making decision making faster.

Education Department To Handle Admissions And School Recognition

With the Urban Cluster Resource Centre becoming operational, the Panvel Municipal Corporation will take charge of several important educational responsibilities.

The civic body will now manage admissions, approve recognition for new schools, implement state and central government education schemes and monitor academic quality across all schools within its limits.

Officials said every school will continue to use its existing U DISE code for national education records. However, all administrative powers related to school management will now remain with the municipal education department.

This model follows the Maharashtra government's broader efforts to strengthen urban local bodies by giving them greater administrative responsibility in sectors such as education, health and civic services.

Proposal Led By PMC Officials Receives State Approval

The proposal for the Urban Cluster Resource Centre was first initiated by Additional Commissioner Mangesh Chitale. It was later actively pursued by Municipal Commissioner Maheshkumar Meghmale and Deputy Commissioner Nanasaheb Kamathe with the Maharashtra government.

To support the new administrative setup, the state government has also approved 16 new posts. These positions will be filled through the prescribed recruitment process to ensure smooth functioning of the education department.

Officials said the additional staff will help the corporation manage the growing number of schools and improve administrative efficiency.

End Of Panchayat Samiti Control For Urban Schools

One of the biggest changes under the new system is that school administration within Panvel Municipal Corporation limits will no longer remain under the Panchayat Samiti.

Instead, the municipal corporation will independently oversee educational administration, allowing quicker decisions and better coordination with schools. This shift is expected to reduce delays in administrative approvals and improve the delivery of education related services.

The move is also in line with Maharashtra's focus on strengthening governance in rapidly growing urban areas where municipal corporations require greater administrative powers to meet rising public needs.

Deputy Commissioner Nanasaheb Kamathe said the decision will make the implementation of educational policies more effective across the city.
