State Government Prioritizes Munawale Project to Boost Tourism and Local Economy

The Maharashtra government has accelerated work on the ambitious ₹92 crore Munawale Aqua Tourism Project, a major initiative designed to establish Satara as one of India's leading water tourism and adventure travel destinations. Planned around the scenic Shivsagar Reservoir near the Koyna Dam, the project is expected to strengthen tourism infrastructure, create new employment opportunities, and attract visitors from across India and overseas.

The project is now one of the state's top tourism priorities as Maharashtra continues investing in destination-based tourism to support regional economic growth.

Tourism Minister Calls for Faster Coordination Across Departments

During a high-level review meeting at Vidhan Bhavan, Maharashtra Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai instructed all concerned government departments to speed up approvals and improve coordination so the project can move ahead without unnecessary delays.

The minister emphasized that every department should work together to complete pending clearances quickly. He also highlighted that the project is being closely monitored by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, reflecting its importance in Maharashtra's long-term tourism strategy.

The review meeting was attended by Public Works Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale, Tourism Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Khandare, Tourism Director Mangesh Joshi, Deputy Secretaries Santosh Rokade and Vijay Powar, along with senior officials from the Forest Department and Water Resources Department.

Project Cost Increased to More Than ₹92 Crore

Officials from the Maharashtra Tourism Department confirmed that the project's revised administrative approval has increased the total investment to more than ₹92 crore.

Most statutory permissions and departmental approvals are currently in the final stages. Once these approvals are completed, construction and infrastructure development are expected to move ahead at a faster pace.

The revised investment reflects the government's larger vision of developing Munawale into a modern tourism destination with international-quality facilities.

World-Class Water Sports and Visitor Facilities Planned

The master plan focuses on developing tourism while protecting the region's natural environment. Located around the vast Shivsagar Reservoir, the project aims to balance sustainable development with modern visitor experiences.

Planned attractions include:

Government Also Approves Memorial at Historic Pratapgad Fort

Alongside the tourism project, the review meeting also focused on strengthening Satara's cultural tourism.

The Maharashtra government has granted in-principle approval for a memorial dedicated to Veer Jivaji Mahale, the trusted bodyguard of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The memorial will include a full-length statue honoring his courage and contribution to Maratha history.

Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai directed district authorities and heritage officials to identify suitable land and prepare the project proposal on priority so that work can begin at the earliest.

Munawale Project Expected to Strengthen Maharashtra's Tourism Vision

The Munawale Aqua Tourism Project represents one of Maharashtra's largest tourism infrastructure investments focused on water-based recreation.
