Maharashtra Board’s Big Exam Upgrade: Shorter Question Papers and Smarter Reforms for Class 10 & 12

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education is preparing to introduce major reforms for Class 10 and Class 12 examinations with a strong focus on student convenience, operational efficiency and transparency in evaluation. From reducing lengthy question papers to strengthening legal safeguards around examination processes, the proposed changes reflect a modern and streamlined approach to board examinations.

According to board officials, the reforms are aimed at making examinations more organised, readable and stress-free for students while also improving administrative efficiency and reinforcing trust in the evaluation system.

Smarter Exam Design for Better Student Experience

According to board chairman Trigun Kulkarni, the current question paper format has become lengthy in several subjects, often extending to 10 or 11 pages. To make examinations more student-friendly and efficient, the board has proposed a major restructuring of the paper format.

“The board spends nearly ₹30 crore annually only on printing question papers. After studying the issue, a committee was constituted and it was decided to significantly reduce the size of the papers,” TrigunKulkarni said.

The new format is expected to reduce question papers to just three to four pages, printed front and back. This move could lead to nearly 60% savings in printing costs while also reducing paper consumption significantly.

A Student-Centric Approach to Board Examinations

The proposed changes are designed to make examinations more organised, clear and accessible for students.

“By shortening and restructuring the paper, we want to bring more clarity and reduce stress,” TrigunKulkarni said.

Under the revised structure, one main question and its related sub-questions will appear together on the same page, making the paper easier to navigate. Questions will also be arranged in a more systematic and chronological sequence, while marks distribution and numbering formats will be displayed more clearly.

The simplified structure is expected to improve readability and help students manage their time more effectively during examinations. The board’s focus reflects a modern approach to assessment where clarity and efficiency play an important role in enhancing the overall examination experience.

Strengthening Trust and Transparency in Evaluation

Alongside the paper format reforms, the board is also working towards strengthening the credibility of the evaluation process.

Currently, the Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices Act, 1982, mainly addresses issues such as paper leaks, tampering with question papers and malpractices at examination centres. The board is now taking steps to expand the legal framework to include answer sheet-related offences as well.

According to the board, amendments are being proposed so that offences linked to answer sheet manipulation, illegal mark enhancement and fake revaluation processes can be treated as cognisable and non-bailable crimes.

This move highlights the board’s commitment to ensuring transparency, fairness and accountability in the examination system.
