Mumbai Seafarer Dies After Missile Hits Tanker In Strait Of Hormuz Amid Rising Regional Tensions

A seafarer from Mumbai has lost his life after a missile reportedly struck a commercial tanker travelling through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The incident took place on March 1 and comes at a time when attacks on merchant vessels in the region have increased amid rising geopolitical tensions.

The victim has been identified as Dixit Amritlal Solanki, a 33-year-old resident of Kandivali who was working as an oiler aboard the tanker MT MKD Vyom.

Missile Strike Reported During Voyage

According to reports, the tanker had departed from Europe in early February and was sailing toward Ras Tanura in Saudi Arabia when the attack occurred. The vessel was passing through the Strait of Hormuz — one of the busiest and most sensitive shipping routes in the world — when a missile reportedly struck it.

The explosion triggered panic among crew members and caused severe damage on board. Solanki was initially reported missing immediately after the blast.

Subsequent updates indicate that he is believed to have died in the explosion. Efforts are now being made to recover his body.

Crew Members Rescued After Attack

The remaining 21 crew members on the tanker were rescued safely by another vessel identified as MT SAND. They were later taken to Muscat, where authorities are completing legal and administrative procedures before the crew members can return to their home ports.

The rescue operation prevented further casualties among the crew.

Other Incidents Reported In The Region

The attack on MT MKD Vyom is not an isolated event. Reports suggest that several incidents involving commercial vessels have taken place in nearby waters in recent days.

Two crew members from another tanker, the Skylight, are currently reported missing. In a separate incident, a seafarer was reportedly killed following a missile strike in Basra.

Meanwhile, four Indian sailors are waiting for repatriation from Bandar Abbas after being affected by regional disruptions to maritime operations.
